Oh Hi There. Remember Me?

Tess at Walden Pond

  • I know that I’ve been slacking here, but as my classes should finally settle down in the coming weeks, I hope to finally get my life back soon.
  • My love for deep frying things is no secret, but for years, I’ve struggled with making nice crispy, greaseless french fries. They’ve always been sort of a pain in the ass to make as it takes a huge pot of oil, multiple fryings, lots and lots of paper towels, and the entire house smells like a deep fryer for a few days. Lo and behold, Cook’s Illustrated recently published a technique that will change all that. Their Easier French Fries starts the potatoes in cold oil, cooks them once slowly until they’re golden and crispy, and requires much less oil. And they’re good. The first attempt came out slightly tough, but that can be easily fixed. Fantastic.
  • Did I mention that I’ve been running Windows 7 on our home PC for a couple of weeks now without a single problem or complaint? Yes, from a Microsoft product. Hell must be freezing over.
  • Yes, I know that the new iPhone just came out, and I could care less that I’m not eligible to upgrade yet. Other than the video features of it, nothing else is life changing. I will happily wait until the next generation iPhone that will undoubtedly come out a year from now and will feature mobile video conferencing and a soft-serve ice cream dispenser.
  • We finished planned our summer vacations to Portland and Nantucket, the first part of which will be child-free. July 15 can’t get here fast enough.
  • The Lovely Tess has recently been requesting for me to sing “Ya Yo”. Ya Yo? What the hell is that? It took me a couple of days that she was referring to Old MacDonald. Huh? “E-I-E-Ya Yo!” Of course. This is the type of decoding that you have to do with a toddler. Oh, and the only animals on the farm are pigs. Over and over and over. Pigs. She has recently expanded to also allow chickens.
  • Our CSA and farmer’s market opened last week marking the true start of summer. I look forward to this all year. Both happen on Thursdays, so our tradition has become to make dinner based solely on things from the market and our share. That can certainly be a challenge with a hungry toddler waiting for dinner, but we’ll try to keep it up as long as we can.
  • We saw our first movie out in about 2 years, catching The Hangover at the Somerville Theater. The movie was fricking hilarious and the theater serves beer! Win win!
  • We followed that up with our fist visit to the new Craig on Main. Our love for the old Craigie is no secret, so we were very excited to try out the new location. It didn’t disappoint. We ate at the bar, had some fantastic cocktails, and shared a bunch of apps. Awesome.
  • We enjoyed a nice lazy father’s day yesterday and the kids got me some sweet new kicks. I feel just like the Cooz! Also, the greatest t-shirt ever.
  • We will be spending the coming weeks looking for a new school for the Lovely Tess. This is perhaps the suckiest thing that we’ve had to deal with in a very long time as her current school, which we love, is suddenly closing at the end of the summer. This blows. Luckily the Lovely Suse is a woman on a mission, so I have no doubt that we’ll find a good place lickety-split.
