Happy Birthday Tess!

Tess
Happy birthday to the Lovely Tess! She turns the big 0-2 today, and she will celebrate with pizza, cupcakes, and most likely, 15 versions of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and the Alphabet song. Possibly a nightcap of Yo Gabba Gabba and milk. What can I say, the girl leads a wild life.

Tess Riding in Her Wagon

  • After a year hiatus (also known as laziness), we once again did some major rework of our front yard landscaping. You’d be amazed how easy it is to just let random stuff grow wherever it feel like and just call it a day. But I used one of my vacation days to rip everything up, do a whole lot of digging, edging, resetting flagstones, replanting everything, and mulching. I also did some reseeding of the lawn, and to break with my all-organic/all-natural lawn care routine, I had to finally spray weed-killer on the lawn. It was just out of control and the grass had no chance of actually growing if I hadn’t done it. Let’s hope that makes a difference. And let’s hope that it doesn’t poison my family.
  • I also put up a Hunter Five-Minute Fan in the Lovely Tess’s room. Guess how long it took me to put it up? Yes, two hours. Five minutes, my ass. I challenge the Hunter CEO to come over to my house and put one of these suckers up in 5 minutes.
  • There is nothing quite like waking up to the smell of BBQ in the morning. It’s hardly true BBQ, but this recipe works like a charm. We’ve done it with pork a bunch of times, but we had a piece of lamb shoulder in the freezer, so we gave it a shot. It was a winner. It cooks for about 10 hours, so when you wake up in the morning after it’s been cooking all night, and you’ve forgotten about it and you open the bedroom door and are hit with the smell of BBQ sauce and slow-cooked meat, well, that’s a nice surprise.
  • Speaking of meat, I had my first beef burger in about four years (or whenever the last time I was in Phoenix and ate at In-N-Out was) at Flat Patties in Harvard Square on Saturday. I will say, I am definitely a fan of the west-coast style burger and was inspired by this article to check it out. I must say, it was an excellent burger. Fries were soggy and undersalted, but I will definitely return for the burger.
  • I know it was “Mother’s Day” yesterday, but I got to take not one but two naps yesterday. That is just plain unheard of. One was by choice and the other was out of desperation, but I will take what I can get.
  • With the amount of time that the Lovely Tess spends in the car with me commuting, she is bound to learn a bad word or two. I was just hoping that she made it at least to her 2nd birthday without learning the word motherfu**er. Whoops. Oh well.
  • That wasn’t nearly as disappointing as what I heard come out of her mouth yesterday. While riding on my shoulders n the grocery store, she took off my Red Sox hat, put it on her head and started telling “Yankees!”. I guess I forgot to teach her the “Suck” part. Until she learns that, she’s been disowned. Sorry Tess. She has obviously been brainwashed by her mother.
