- we didn’t eat out the entire week. not a once. we’re in super-saving mode now, trying to live “thriftily” while i save up for my sex-change operation.
- we made our version of pepe’s white clam pizza this weekend. and i gotta say, it was pretty damn good. shucking mahogany clams is a hell of a lot easier than shucking oysters.
- yes, i’m back to taking pictures of my food. i’m crazy. soon, you will be able to find the recipes here as well. it’s, um, still in the works. as soon as i get my creative team working on the design…
- did you know that you can do your federal taxes online for free using turbotax online? really easy and quick. this is the earliest i’ve ever finished my taxes.
- my bike broke yesterday. the belt came off and it took about 2 hours to try to fix it. i had just about given up and was ready to bring it back to the store and get a new one. but then a stroke of genius took told of me and i managed to untangle the puzzle. yay me!
- it’s possible to buy brand-new-still-in-the-plastic pairs of sevens on ebay for about $40. this is pretty sweet considering you pay $150+ for them in stores. screw retail.
- hey, maybe i should get me some micropatrons. uber-blogger jason kottke has quit his day job and is depending on the generosity of his readers to support his blogging full-time. come on, if every gives me cash, i’ll promise to give you lots and lots of recipes and pictures of me nekkid and stuff.
- we thought the aviator sucked. ok, so leo was pretty good and there was some nice cinematography (at least i think that’s what it is), but where was the story? thank god it didn’t win the oscar.

- 3 day weekends. especially unexepected one. i never get president’s day off, and fully expected to be working yesterday. it wasn’t until thursday that some one mentioned that we get it off. sweet.
- gordon’s bachelor party in nyc. and thanks to dave and lisa for letting me crash. they also have the one of the sweetest setups in nyc apartment living. lucky kids.
- yes, my hair really is that long.
- the bowling night of my life at leisure time lanes. yes, bowling in port authority. now that’s class. but seriously, i bowled a 120-something, a 120-something, and an all-time best of 149. in the second game our team bowled a combined 502. also, my 149 was bowled mostly in the dark as their “rock ‘n roll bowling kicked in”. although they really just shutoff the lights and turned up the music so you were pretty much bowling blind. i think the 3-4 beer mark is where i’m inthe bowling zone.
- since i was in nyc, i figured i should probably go see the gates. i was sort of skeptical of the whole thing going in, and it was pretty much what i was expecting. yes, it was cool to see, and there were 8 zillion people in there walking around on a freezing february day, and i saw christo and jeanne-claude drive by in their maybach. but it didn’t blow me away. although i’m pretty sure that it’s the highest concentration of cameras in one spot ever.
- a vistit to frank pepe’s pizza in new haven. this one will get it’s own entry, but needless to say, this is one of the pizza landmarks in this country. it’s a tourist destination, and with good reason. not many places get a line 60 people deep an hour before they open on a sunday afternoon. but due to a series of events, sunday was the day for us to make our first visit. and it will not be our last. the legendary white clam pie lived up to the hype, and the mozzarella pie was one of the best we’ve ever had. we can’t really compare it to pizzeria bianco, but it’s up there as one of the best pizzas we’ve ever had. if you’re in the area, make a stop.
- i know we’re crazy, but sometimes, we just outdo ourselves. for example, on our president’s day-off, most people would choose to relax, enjoy the free day, maybe watch a movie or two, and stay out of the snow. no, not us. starting at about 10am, our weekly trip to russo’s, whole foods, and formaggio, followed by making and jarring 15 jars of tomato sauce, making fresh porcini and ricotta ravioli, cleaning the entire apartment, washing our sheets and towels, and making a salt and fennel crusted chicken for dinner. oh, and i worked out. we’re stupid.
- you may have noticed some new food photos. all in preparation for the new site. still a work in progress.
- i finally found jeans that fit me. unfortunately they cost $145. incredibly, you can get them on ebay for about $40. if they only had my size. luckily, they have susanne’s size. this could get very dangerous.
- “you MUST come over and photograph my sausage.” - Mark’s shameless plea to have me take pictures of his “2 pound andouille”. i never get tired of dick jokes!
- did you know that it’s possible to get free verizon mobile web access and free ring-tones for your verizon cellphone?

- for those of you hoping for lots of new entries and a new design this week, sorry. i’m working on the new design, and hopefully, i should be able to get something worked out this week.
- da ali g translata.. check out what my site looks like through the mind and voice of ali g. this thing is great. it can make any highbrow site look completely trashy in seconds.
- i think we made 3 or 4 new recipes last week. that’s a lot even by our standards. probably the best was jamie oliver’s chicken roasted in salt, fennel, and thyme. you completely encase the chicken in an entire box of kosher salt, fennel seeds, lemon, peppercorns, thyme, eggs, and water so the salt forms a crust, keeps the chicken sealed in, and keeps it really moist and tender. the herbs and spices permeate the meat, and the chicken practically falls apart after roasting for 2 hours. really easy and really tasty. and no, it doesn’t taste all salty.
- million dollar baby. ok, so i already knew about the controversy surrounding this movie and i knew the surprising plot twist. still, this movie was great.
- the debut of bostonist.com. the gothamist empire continues to expand.
- the annual family valentines weekend dinner at tosca. except this year it was at tosca more casual sibling, caffe tosca. it’s really hard to critique a place where the chef’s dad works for my dad and we get sent out 2 extra courses and dessert. needless to say, we had a good experience here.
- a completly painless and glitchfree tivo upgrade. we now have 134 hours of tivo joy.
- i don’t think i’ve mentioned this one before, but unscripted is a really interesting and funny show. it’s a bit surreal with how the actors play characters with their same name, and a lot of the stuff that happens in the show actually happens in real life, and a lot of the show is improvised. check out this nytimes article (registration required) about it.

- Dynasty. Yes, i know we Boston fans are completely spoiled at this point. 3 super bowl wins in 4 years and the sox winning the world series (i’ll try to mention that as much as possible before the season starts). half-time was boring, there was no nudity, and the commercials were pretty boring. But really, can I complain?
- i bought an exercise bike. it’s an inexpensive, small, but sturdy bike that fits in our closet. so instead of having to go to the gym if all i want to do is ride the bike and get a good sweat, i can just roll it out in front of the tv and catch up on some tivo. very nice. someday, i’ll actually have a complete home gym. and someday, we’ll even have another bedroom and a dishwasher. one step at a time.
- our first ever roux. and our first ever gumbo (registration required). we didn’t have any anduille, and it definitely could have used it. next time.
- in a single day, i ate both a lamb sausage from formaggio and a pork tenderloin sandwich from b-side. people, times are a-changing. pretty soon, i’ll be eating everything. bring on the meat! all in moderation though.
- so i’m taking a food writing course at BU and trying to write as much as possible. so what’s the easiest way to write? well, to post something every day here. i’ll see what i can do. i’m starting with some of our recipes, some reviews that i’ve written, and anything else i feel like writing about that’s food related. so all of you that have asked me for recipes for some of those pictures that i have up, now’s the time to request them again, and i’ll add it to the list of things to write about. don’t worry, though. the top ten will still be here every monday. and any feedback or suggestions are more than welcome.
- ice cream flavors of the week: fresh mint, mint chocolate chip, fresh raspberry, peppermint stick.
- fooled by april live at TT the Bear’s. probably the last time we’ll see them for a long time, what with them recording a new album and various band members getting married.
- the return of le marechal. probably a good year after we started buying and eating cheese seriously, our first favorite has reappeared. now i remember why we loved it so much.
- i bought an $8 pair of sneakers. they’re hi-tec squash sneakers that are green and yellow and very cool looking. oh, and they’re women’s shoes. relax, they don’t look all girlie, and you’d never know. they look like this, but they’re green with yellow trim.
- forget what i’ve said before. the chocolate brownie clifbar is my new favorite flavor. i don’t know what they did when they redid the packaging and the flavors a bunch of months back, but these things are so good. it’s like a chewy fudgy brownie that’s good for you.
- mark sent me a package full of wet-naps. ah, lemony freshness! thanks mark!
- we’ve seen these sharon fruit at a bunch of places and had to try them out. they look like persimmons, but don’t have to be all super-ripe before eating. they have the texture almost of a underripe tomato, the smell of pizza dough, but they taste nice and sweet and fruity. i don’t know what to compare it to. litchies maybe? if you see them, buy one and try for yourself. if you don’t like it, just blame me.

- sorry for the delay. i had some other writing to do yesterday.
- two miserably failed tivo repairs this weekend. things are never easy with these things. and as a result, we lost all of our recordings. the only thing i’m upset that i lost was the red sox world series victory. at least i have this picture to help me.
- since now everyone i know with a dog feels neglected, i present to you abby!
- great bay, or as i call it, pretty good bay. at least we got to use susanne’s AMEX Be My Guest Dining Gift Card so it only cost an arm rather than an arm and a leg.
- i gotta say, i’m a little disappointed in this season of the bachelorette. i’m also a little embarrased that i watch this show, but it’s addictive. these dudes are so pathetic.
- um, the pats are playing in the super bowl this weekend. it’s sort of strange that this has just become old hat now. are we new england sports fans just spoiled now? yup. and i don’t care.
- you know what movie always chokes me up? rudy. yup, i know it’s corny and cliched, but i love the underdog story. plus, you get to see the fat, pre-swingers jon favreau and vince vaughn in one of his first roles. oh, and the kid from goonies and toy soldiers plays rudy. oh right, he was a hobbit or something too. god, i love imdb.
- i think i’ve shoveled about 14 parking spots on our street. my back is very happy about that.
- susanne is very excited about her new space bags. i have to admit, they are pretty cool. it sucks all the air out of stuff to make them really small for storage.
- i’m thinking i’m going to have to make a new page for some of my food writing… ah another project
- i forgot about this one: mtv’s sweet 16. this show is a completely fascinating trainwreck that you just have to watch. spoiled , pathetic, bitchy, rich 16 years celebrating their sweet 16 for all the world to see.
